Virginia May Melodies Beasley Shull was born in Dona Ana County, near Las Cruces, New Mexico, on December 18, 1924, to Chester and May Beasley.   She married Robert Shull on September 4, 1945, 75 years ago.  Bob passed away in 1996 after a long fight with kidney and heart disease.

She grew up on a homestead near White Sands, and was home-schooled until she attended Valley High School in Anthony, N.M. At age 16 she became a Seventh-day Adventist,  attended Pacific Union College,  and obtained her Associate degree in Business and Secretarial Science.  On a break in southern California during the summer recess, having recovered from scarlet fever, she ventured out on the roller rink and met Robert Lee Shull.  She and Robert eloped 3 months later to Las Vegas, and Bob becoming the dedicated lifelong Adventist.   17 months later Robert Leland was born.

Because of Bob’s illnesses (a scooter accident in the early 1950s and at age 48, kidney disease) Virginia balanced her role as a mother and wife with her role as a breadwinner, as a full time business administrative assistant.  She retired as the business services administrator at the Charter Oak School District.

She served her local church with a lifetime of commitment.  The most significant contribution of many roles in church life was that of supporting and facilitating fellowship;  hundreds of after-church meals with guests from church later became a “Friendship Group” of 25-30.   She supported the ordination of women in the gospel ministry.

Virginia was enamored with her grandchildren, and they all grew up close enough to the Covina home to visit regularly, sometimes all together.   The bonds formed between cousins remain today.

Virginia continued to enjoy the gathering of family and visits from friends, and many a game of chicken scratch.  Even when, at the age of 93, she claimed her vision had completely failed her, she could trounce all opponents with her skilled grasp of the layout of dominoes on the dining room table.

She leaves behind her son Robert, of Covina, CA, daughter Pamela Gibb (Larry) of Columbia, MO., son William (Catherine), of Loma Linda, CA, daughter Karen Odell of Angwin, CA, and son Charles (Agnes) of Ridgecrest, CA; grandchildren Johana (Tyler) St. Clair, Jonathan and Christopher (Lizelle); Heather and Heidi (Jathan) Odell, Chrystle (Robbie) Blake and Audrey, Stephen (Javier), Nathaniel and James Gibb; and numerous and notable great-grandchildren, including Eleanor Kalea, Eleanor Joyce, Annabelle, Eliott and Levi.

Donations in lieu of flowers are to the West Covina Hills S.D.A. Church foyer project – as Virginia was committed to supporting and nurturing Christian fellowship.
